Delicious and Nutritious Fragile, Delicious and Always in Season. The succulent strawberry. It’s the most popular fruit in the shopping cart. And its also one of the most fragile. Once picked, a strawberry stays fresh a modest ten days. So it takes a great deal of care to get a fresh berry from field to grocer. But fruit lovers appreciate the attention their juicy, ripe strawberry receives each time they bite into one. Strawberries begin their journey as small plants grown in nurseries in the Pacific Northwest. From there, theyre shipped to the growing regions of California. Workers prepare the soil for these plants, creating a bed for each one and installing drip irrigation to help them grow in the hot western sun. Our growers apply fertilizer and crop protection inputs and put plastic mulch in the beds to maintain a constant growing temperature. Workers place in the soil, by hand about 25,000 strawberry plants per acre. After the plants take root, they soon produce their first leaf growth. A month later, cool ocean breezes have nurtured the plants, and they begin bearing fruit. Harvesters start picking berries once they have attained a bright red color and peak flavor. And they continue removing ripe berries from the plants every few days throughout the year as the crop rotates. Sunrise Growers ~ Frozsun Foods, Inc. works with many small growers who plant different varieties at various times of the year in all three main growing regions of California. That way, we can harvest berries and supply them year round for you to enjoy in any season. The same day theyre picked, berries are packed in the field and immediately brought to refrigerated coolers to lock in that fresh-picked flavor. About two-thirds of our strawberries are sold fresh; one-third is sold frozen. Our refrigerated trucks transport the berries to retailers coast to coast where customers can expect to find their favorite fruit ripe, delicious and ready to eat.
